As a photography student finishes school and begins shooting or assisting for profit, he realizes that there is much more to the business than he originally thought. The Pro Photo Business Blog is incessantly negative, and I usually can’t stand to read it, but this is a quip from a recent post I liked:
“Many people become photographers for the wrong reasons. For some, this profession might supply glamour, a creative outlet, or a need to express oneself, but these are reasons why you would choose a hobby. If you want to survive as a professional, you have to generate a sustainable profit. Here’s something they don’t teach you in photo school: Ninety percent of being a professional photographer is looking for work. Only nine percent is actually taking the photo. According to Arnold Newman, the last one percent is moving furniture.”
